Fatima in the very heart of Portugal is located in the mountainous central region of the Serra de Aire, about thirty miles from the Atlantic Ocean. About half a mile from Fatima parish church lies the little hamlet of Aljustrel, where the three little shepherds were born, to which Our Lady appeared from May to October 1917. Over a mile to the west lies the Cova de Iria, one of the many undulating valleys of the region. It is she that Our Lady appeared five times to the little shepherds, Jacinto, Francisco and Lucia.
