Biography; Pilots; Beryl Markham was born in England in 1902. She went to live with her father in East Africa in 1906. She spend her childhood playing with native Murani children and watching her father transform a stretch of wilderness into a working farm. After apprenticing with her father as a trainer and breeder of racehorses, she turned to aviation. From 1931 to 1936 she carried mail, passengers, and supplies in her small plane to remote corners of the Sudan, Tanganyika, Kenya, and Rhodesia. In September 1936 she became the first person to fly solo across the Atlantic from east to west - taking off in England and crash-landing in Nova Scotia twenty-one hours and twenty-five minutes later. Ms. Markham died August 3, 1986, at her home in Nairobi Kenya. A wise, funny and inspiring exploration of a life well lived. (293 Pgs.) BOOK VVG
